Barcelona on foot in 3 hours: Sagrada Familia, Modernism, and Roman Barcino
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
BarcelonaThree eras of Barcelona in three hours, on foot and in order: the city of Gaudí, the bourgeois modernist era, and the Roman and medieval era that still lies beneath. The tour starts at the Sagrada Família, continues along Passeig de Gràcia, and ends in the Gothic Quarter, where the Roman layout can still be traced with your finger. The tour is led by guides from Roots & Roads, a team born and raised in Barcelona. The approach is not to simply list monuments, but to connect them: why what was built was built, who paid for it, and how it is lived in those same neighborhoods today. Along the way, practical recommendations from those who live here are also provided. The main monuments are explained from the outside. In some places, you may briefly enter when admission is free.

Basílica de la Sagrada Familia
The unfinished work of Gaudí, viewed from the street, reading the facades as a narrative. The focus is on the symbolism, the design choices, and how the temple has become a defining symbol of the city.
Discover Gaudí's radical break from conventions...
Gaudí's break from the conventions of the time is evident in the undulating stone facade and the twisted iron balconies. Here, we see how nature, structure, and symbolism ultimately become one and the same.
Estudia la fachada mas imaginativa de Gaudí
Gaudí's most imaginative facade, inspired by nature and the legend of Saint George. From the bone-shaped balconies to the roof that resembles a dragon's spine, the symbols that transformed Passeig de Gràcia are revealed.
The most iconic house designed by Puig i Cadafalch combines various influences...
Puig i Cadafalch's most famous house blends Gothic references with the aspirations of the bourgeoisie of that era. The stepped facade and the sculptures reveal how wealthy families shaped the modernist movement.
The most ornate work by Domènech i Montaner combines...
Domènech i Montaner's most elaborate work combines sculpture, mosaic, and stained glass in a single design. Every detail speaks of status, craftsmanship, and the confidence of a specific moment in time.
Plaça de Catalunya
Plaça de Catalunya is located exactly where the old city ends and the Eixample district begins. From there, you can walk down Portal de l'Àngel, following the route of an ancient Roman gate that has been transformed into a commercial street.
Antiguo punto de encuentro de artistas e intelectuales
This historic meeting place was frequented by artists and intellectuals, including a young Picasso, Dalí, and Gaudí. It's a place where you can learn about the bohemian atmosphere that shaped modern Barcelona.
The last remaining sections of the aqueduct...
The last remnants of the aqueduct that supplied water to the Roman city of Barcino. Beneath the streets of today lies an ancient city, carefully planned and constructed.
Desde lejos, un beso (A kiss from afar)
From a distance, a kiss. Up close, thousands of small photographs depicting personal freedoms. A contemporary work exploring memory, identity, and collective expression.
En Plaza Nova
In Plaça Nova, Picasso's mural faces the Roman defensive towers that marked the entrance to Barcino, with the Cathedral located directly behind.
Catedral de Barcelona
In the old town, the Cathedral serves as the focal point, defining the medieval layout of the city. The emphasis is on the contrast between the Gothic church from the 13th century and the neo-Gothic facade that was added in the late 19th century.
Built in part with stones from the Roman wall of...
Built in part with stones from the 1st-century Roman wall, the old Casa de l'Ardiaca demonstrates how medieval Barcelona literally reused its past.
Aqui conviven belleza y tragedia
A quiet square, still bearing the marks of shrapnel from the Spanish Civil War on its walls. Gaudí used to walk through here, and it was here that the tram that ultimately caused his death struck him.
Pont del Bisbe
The Bishop's Bridge looks medieval, but it was actually built in the 20th century. Its neo-Gothic style says a lot about how Barcelona wanted to reconstruct its own past. It's worth looking for the skull hidden beneath the arch.
MUHBA Temple d'August
Four columns from the Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus, dating back to the 1st century BC. Hidden within a courtyard, they provide a true sense of the scale of what Barcino once was.
Barcelona's political heart since Roman times
Barcelona's political center has been the same location since Roman times. From the ancient forum to the current Catalan government and city hall, power has resided in this spot for two millennia.
The historic square from the medieval period, where kings would receive ambassadors...
The royal square from the medieval period, where kings received ambassadors and where Columbus met with the Catholic Monarchs in 1493 upon his return from the Americas. The entire history of feudal Barcelona is reflected in this stone setting.
