Park Güell for a group of six: the garden city that was never built
A tour of Park Güell for a group of no more than six people. The guide waits at the Carmel entrance; you enter without queuing, and along the way, they explain what almost no one knows: that this was not originally intended to be a park. Count Güell wanted a garden city on the hillside, away from the noise and smoke of the city center, with views of the sea. He commissioned the project to Gaudí, and what is visited today is what remains of that original idea. Walking along the viaducts, which were built for carriages and people to pass, one understands the real challenge: how to make a rocky hill habitable. The solution was one of engineering, rather than decoration. In the center is the dragon staircase, which curves with the slope instead of against it, and it is one of the many places where Gaudí allowed the terrain to dictate the design. Also, his way of celebrating Catalan culture is evident everywhere. The tour ends at the top, on the undulating bench of the terrace. There, you have time to sit and enjoy the view of the Barcelona coastline.
