The Park Güell was originally conceived as a closed residential area for affluent families and ultimately became a public park. This commercial failure is key to understanding why the site is laid out as it is, and this is where the guide's explanation begins. With priority access, you enter directly into the monumental area, the paid section: the Salamander on the staircase, the Hypostyle Room with its tilted columns, and the gardens that grow among the stone. During the tour, you can see where Gaudí drew his ideas from, with echoes ranging from Roman to Arabic influences, and how he translated them into fragmented ceramics and walls that seem to emerge from the ground. After completing the guided portion, the park is at your disposal: you can stay and look calmly, or go up to the high viewpoints, where the city appears in its entirety.
