Colònia Güell and its crypt, with an audio guide: a precursor to the Sagrada Família
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
BarcelonaTwo hours with an audio guide to explore the Colònia Güell, the modernist workers' town south of Barcelona, and its crypt. Eusebi Güell commissioned modernist architects to build an entire town for the workers of his textile factory. From there came the houses, the school, the theater, the shops, the gardens, and the cooperative buildings, all still standing and accessible today: Catalan popular architecture with towers and mosaics on top. The crypt is the most important part. Gaudí used it as a laboratory: here he tested the inclined columns and arches that he later used in the Sagrada Família. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. With the audio guide, everyone can go at their own pace, and after the two hours, you can continue exploring the colony for as long as you like.

The time of the visit is chosen when booking. Upon arrival, the audio guide and the printed guide are collected at the information center of Colònia Güell. From there, you explore the village: the attached houses, the school, the factory, the shops, the gardens, and the buildings of the cooperative. The audio guide explains how Eusebi Güell commissioned modernist architects to house the workers of his textile factory, and how the result blends Catalan popular architecture with towers and mosaic tiles. After the village, you reach the crypt, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2005. Gaudí designed this church in 1882 and used it to test the solutions that he would later apply in the Sagrada Família. Outside, there is a play of volumes; inside, there are arches, inclined columns, and two naves, built at different heights to adapt to the slope of the land. The visit with the audio guide lasts two hours, but you can stay in the area for as long as you like.
