El Capricho, Santillana, and Santander, viewed from Bilbao

A nine-hour tour that departs from Bilbao and crosses into Cantabria to see the Gaudí work that is furthest from Barcelona. The meeting point is under the Puppy sculpture, next to the Guggenheim Museum. From there, it's about an hour and a half drive west. Comillas The first stop is one of the most beautiful towns on the Cantabrian coast. There is a 30-minute guided tour that passes near the Puerta de los Pájaros (Bird's Gate), the Palacio de Sobrellano, and the Casa del Duque de Almodóvar del Río. Next is El Capricho, whose original name is Villa Quijano. It's about 40 minutes of guided tour inside and through the gardens. It is one of the few works by the architect of the Sagrada Familia built outside of Catalonia, and this rarity is noticeable in the building. Leaving Comillas, the tour stops at a viewpoint overlooking the coast. Santillana del Mar Another half hour along the coast. The town is not on the seashore, despite its name. It's a 40-minute walk to see the exterior of the colegiata de Santa Juliana and the palaces of the Velarde and Peredo Barreda families. Then there is an hour of free time for lunch. Santander Another half hour of travel and a one-hour guided tour of the Cantabrian capital, also from the exterior: the cathedral, the Centro Botín, the monument to Pereda, the Parque Alfonso XIII, and the church of El Cristo.
