A private tour of modernist Barcelona with a local guide, taking a close look at what most people pass by. The tour starts outside the center of Plaça de Catalunya, the border between the old city and the Eixample. Here, you'll learn about how Barcelona grew and see the impacts of the Spanish Civil War that are still visible on the facades. Next, Passeig de Gràcia: the street where the Catalan bourgeoisie of the turn of the century displayed their wealth, with palaces in different styles and an open competition between architects. You'll stop at the "bancs-fanals," the modernist streetlights that have been there for over a century and that almost no one looks at, the Casa Lleó i Morera by Domènech i Montaner, and the Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, whose interior courtyard can be entered without paying. You'll also see the Casa Malagrida, which belonged to a tobacco industrialist who made his fortune in Argentina, and whose story is told on the facade itself. The final stop is the Sagrada Família, with half an hour dedicated to viewing its facades from the street. The guide can be identified by a blue umbrella with a bat on it.

  1. Pg. de Gràcia, 1, Barcelona

In the center of Plaça de Catalunya. The guide will be holding a blue umbrella with our logo, a bat.

  2. Plaza de Catalunya

This square marks the boundary between the old city of Barcelona and the Eixample district. Here, we discuss how the city transformed, and we point out the scars of the Spanish Civil War that are still visible on some facades. Before moving on to the modernist district for the second part of the tour, we'll explore this area.

  3. Paseo de Gracia

The most expensive street in the Eixample district, and the heart of wealthy Barcelona at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Here, families from the Catalan bourgeoisie built their homes during the industrial boom, each in a different style. Among them, the Modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudí and his contemporaries stands out: new forms, decoration everywhere, and a menagerie of dragons, warriors, and strange figures adorning the facades.

  4. Bancs Fanals

The modernist street lamps on Passeig de Gràcia, which have been there for over a century, are full of symbolism and details that often go unnoticed.

  5. La Mansana de la Discòrdia

The Casa Lleó i Morera is part of the "Block of Discord," Barcelona's most famous modernist block. Designed by Domènech i Montaner at the beginning of the 20th century, its facade is full of references to the architect's life and ideas, as well as those of its owners.

  6. Casa Amatller

One of the most well-known modernist houses in the Eixample district, the Casa Amatller, designed by Puig i Cadafalch, belonged to a family of chocolate manufacturers. The exhibition explores the chocolate business of the era, the Amatller family, and, above all, the hidden symbols on the facade. Admission is free to the interior courtyard, where you can view the staircase, the old elevator, and the sculptures.

  7. Basílica de la Sagrada Familia

The most famous monument in Barcelona, and the work that Gaudí left unfinished, marks the end of the tour. We'll spend half an hour admiring its facades from the street, learning about its construction and the details that explain how it was built.

  8. La Casa Malagrida

The Malagrida House is the first modernist bourgeois house on the route. It belonged to Mr. Malagrida, a tobacco industrialist, and his life, which straddled Argentina and Spain, is reflected in the design of the facade.

  9. Sagrada Família, Barcelona

The tour ends in front of the Sagrada Familia, which is the final stop on the route.
