Discount for residents in the Sagrada Familia area: 50% off, expiring on December 31st. Applications must be submitted by mail
The Sagrada Familia offers a 50% discount on admission for those who can prove they reside in the city of Barcelona, but the tickets are not purchased in advance; they are requested by mail and are valid until December 31, 2026. The terms and conditions were reviewed on November 4th, and here's what other monuments offer.
The discount for residents of the Sagrada Família is 50%, is valid until December 31, 2026, and has a particularity that explains why almost no one uses it: it is not purchased. It does not appear on the basilica's sales form, and it cannot be requested at the ticket office. Tickets are obtained by writing to an email address and attaching a document.
With less than two months remaining, those who live in Barcelona and haven't yet visited the basilica, or who are planning to bring family from out of town for the holidays, have reason to consider it now. This article explains how to request a discount, what conditions apply, the cost of each ticket with the discount, and what other Gaudí monuments offer to local residents. This text is intended for the local population, not tourists, and it doesn't sell anything: those who are eligible for the discount should purchase tickets on the official website, not through a third party.
Everything that follows is taken from the official promotion page on sagradafamilia.org, read in its entirety on November 4, 2026 in its English version, as well as the price lists for La Pedrera and Palau Güell, which were also read on the same day.
How to purchase tickets for the Sagrada Familia with the resident discount
The process is short and involves only one step that cannot be done from the couch: you need to go to the basilica with the required document. According to the official website, which we read in English:
- Write to [email protected]. This is the address that appears six times on the page, both for requesting tickets, for changes, and for inquiries.
- Please attach proof of residence in the city of Barcelona. The website requests a copy of an official photo ID, or a municipal certificate of registration, or both (the original wording is "and/or").
- Waiting for a response. The page states that these tickets cannot be purchased online or at the box office, and that all requests are subject to availability.
- Please bring proof of residency on the day of the visit. The basilica requests it again at the door.
The promotion applies to all four individual ticket options for the general admission: the standard ticket, the ticket with a guided tour, the ticket including access to the tower, and the ticket including both a guided tour and access to the tower. It does not apply to groups of more than nine people, which are subject to the basilica's group booking policies.
Since the website doesn't provide further instructions, it's best to write the entire email at once. It's reasonable to include in the same message the name of each visitor, the type of ticket desired, the preferred date and time with an alternative, and any outstanding questions (e.g., whether the person is under 30 years old, the document to be attached). Each round of email exchanges takes days, and there's little time left: availability in December, with the city full of holiday visitors, is the first thing to run out.
Resident discount at the Sagrada Familia: prices with a 50% discount applied
The standard rates for the basilica remain as published on its price list, and a 50% discount applies to those rates. Here are the four prices, with the savings per person.
| Input | Standard rate | With a 50% occupancy rate | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sagrada Familia | €26 | €13 | €13 |
| With guided tour | €30 | €15 | €15 |
| With tower | €36 | €18 | €18 |
| With guided tour and tower access | €40 | €20 | €20 |
A family of four residents who visit the tower pay 72 € instead of 144 €. With a guided tour and the tower, the cost is 80 € instead of 160 €. And since the discount allows for nine tickets per reservation, a large family can fit within a single email.
There's a question that the website doesn't answer. The basilica has its own reduced rate for those under 30 and for students, which already lowers the price by two euros (24€ for a single entry). However, the promotional text states that the 50% discount doesn't apply to other discounts or benefits. A 25-year-old resident, reading the website, is unsure whether it's better to request the 50% discount on the general price of 26€ or if it will be calculated based on the 24€ reduced rate. The difference is one euro per entry, 13€ versus 12€, and any calculation made without asking is just an assumption. The best way to clarify this is to ask directly in the same email when requesting the reservation.
It's also important to consider the cost of the alternative option. Those who live in Barcelona and don't have the necessary documentation pay the standard price without any further process, and the online ticketing website is available at any time. The discount is worthwhile when you're going with a group or planning to visit the tower. Even for a single ticket, saving 13 euros can make the email booking process worthwhile.
The terms and conditions that almost no one reads
The promotion has reasonable terms and conditions, but it's important to be aware of them before sending the email, as you could lose money if you don't read them.
- All those who use the tickets must be residents. The page is explicit: any person who uses the promotional tickets must live in the city of Barcelona and must prove this when booking and on the day of the visit. The brother who lives in Badalona or the cousin from Valencia do not qualify for this discount.
- The person making the reservation must be one of the visitors. It is not possible to make a reservation for others.
- Tickets are personal and non-transferable. The website prohibits gifting or donating them, because the discount is only for residents.
- Maximum of 9 tickets per reservation. Groups of more than nine people are subject to different rules. Reservations can be made as many times as you like throughout the year.
- This offer cannot be combined with other discounts.
- Changes and returns, with a deadline. As a general rule, tickets are neither exchanged nor returned. Changes or returns can be requested at least 48 hours before the visit, only for unused tickets, and changes must be made within 15 days following the original visit date. Within 48 hours, an official justification for the reason is required.
If there are both residents and non-residents in a group, the solution offered on the website is that those from outside the area purchase their tickets through the regular channel, separately. In practice, this involves two separate processes for the same time slot: the basilica sells tickets in time slots, and it's advisable to check the availability of both options before confirming either. When the time slots go on sale is explained in the ticket release calendar.
"Resident" doesn't have the same meaning at every historical site
It's the part that causes the most confusion, and the reason why it's advisable to read the requirement before paying. La Sagrada Família offers discounts to residents of the city of Barcelona: neither the metropolitan area nor the rest of Catalonia. La Pedrera offers discounts to residents in Catalonia, which is a much wider circle, and requires a national ID card (DNI) or foreign resident ID (NIE), proof of residency, or health card. Each monument has defined its own area, and a Catalan resident of Girona may be eligible for a discount at one Gaudí house but not at another.
The table summarizes what we were able to verify on the official websites on November 4, 2026. If a website does not display a resident rate, the corresponding cell indicates this. This does not necessarily mean that a special agreement does not exist; it simply means that we did not find it listed.
| Monument and entrance | Standard price | Resident rate | Who qualifies as a resident |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sagrada Familia, standard entrance | €26 | €13 | City of Barcelona; applications accepted only by mail, until December 31, 2026 |
| La Pedrera, Essential | €29 | €14.50 | Catalonia |
| La Pedrera, Night Experience | €39.50 | €22 | Catalonia |
| La Pedrera, Art Season | €35 | €19.50 | Catalonia |
| La Pedrera + Sant Pau | €42 | €27.50 | Catalonia |
| La Pedrera + Palau de la Música | €42 | €25 | Catalonia |
| La Pedrera + Dalí Theatre-Museum | €44.50 | €30 | Catalonia |
| Palau Güell | €15 | Does not display resident rates | Free admission on the first Sunday of every month |
| Casa Batlló, general admission | From €29 | Does not display resident rates | Not available |
La Pedrera offers discounts to residents of Catalonia, and often these discounts are as high as 50%
Of the monuments we checked, La Pedrera is the one that takes the idea the furthest. The "Esencial" ticket, priced at €29, is reduced to 14.50 € for residents of Catalonia, and the ticket information clearly indicates this with the general price crossed out next to it. Tickets with a show and exhibition are reduced to a lesser extent: the "Night Experience" goes from €39.50 to €22, and the "Art Season" from €35 to €19.50. Combined tickets with Sant Pau, the Palau de la Música, or the Dalí Theatre-Museum are reduced between €14.50 and €17.
There's a calendar detail that benefits everyone, regardless of where they live: the La Pedrera website announces a 10% discount only in November on the Essential and Sunrise tickets. The website doesn't clarify whether this discount applies to the resident price, so it's best not to count on it.
For a resident of Barcelona, the pricing is quite interesting: the "Esencial" plan from La Pedrera, with the resident rate (14.50 €), costs 1.50 € more than the "Sagrada Família" plan with the 50% discount (13 €). So, the two most famous Gaudí buildings can be visited for less than 28 € if you have the appropriate discount for each case.
The Palau Güell does not offer special rates for residents on the page we reviewed. Its standard rate is €15, but it does offer free admission on certain dates: the first Sunday of each month, and on specific holidays such as February 12th (Saint Eulàlia), April 23rd (Saint George's Day), September 11th (Catalan National Day), and September 24th (La Mercè). On the Casa Batlló's ticket page for November 1st, no resident rates were listed. We were unable to access the pages on the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau that display their discounts for local residents, so we are unable to provide any figures for those institutions. This article does not repeat prices that we were unable to verify.
What happens on January 1st, 2027?
The official website states that the promotion is valid from January 1st to December 21st, 2026, and does not mention 2027 anywhere. There is no announcement of an extension, renewal, or definitive end. The only thing that can be stated on November 4th is that the tickets with the 50% discount are for visits within 2026, and that the website does not explain what happens with a reservation made now for a later date.
Anyone planning to visit in January or February should write now and inquire about availability for those dates. Don't assume that the promotion will continue. If it is renewed, the basilica will have to announce it on their website, and we will update this information here. If it is not renewed, this text will become a record of a discount that ended, and it will be rewritten to reflect the resident rates, which will continue to be available.
If you are not a resident: here's how you can save money on a visit to Gaudí's works
50% is for residents, and the basilica requires proof of residency twice, when booking and at the entrance. For visitors from outside, the savings on Gaudí are found elsewhere and are of a smaller amount. The reduced rate for those under 30 at the Sagrada Família (24 € instead of 26 €) exists and is often not mentioned. Combined tickets offer savings when visiting multiple attractions, and a comparison of the four basilica tickets is available in our review with the official price listed. With the towers involved, choosing the right one to climb avoids regrets that no discount can fix.
The opening hours and access rules for the Sagrada Família are on the tickets, hours, and visit page. And those who want to combine La Pedrera with the Modernist Site of Sant Pau can look at the ticket category for La Pedrera, where the combined ticket appears for €56 from one provider in the catalog, compared to €42 on the official La Pedrera website. It's worth checking what each one includes before comparing.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Sagrada Família Resident Discount
What document is required to qualify for the resident discount?
The official website requests that, when writing to [email protected], you provide a copy of your official photo ID and/or a municipal certificate of residency that proves you live in the city of Barcelona. Proof of residency is also required at the basilica on the day of your visit. The website does not specify what happens if your ID does not show an address in Barcelona, so it is advisable to inquire about this by email beforehand.
Can I bring a friend who doesn't live in Barcelona with me and still use the discount?
No. The official website requires that all individuals using the promotional tickets must be residents of the city of Barcelona and provide proof of residency both when booking and on the day of the visit. The tickets are personal and non-transferable. The friend from outside the city must purchase their ticket through the regular channels.
Can I purchase a ticket with a 50% discount either on the Sagrada Familia website or at the ticket counter?
No. The basilica states that these tickets cannot be purchased online or at the ticket office. Instead, they must be requested by email at [email protected], and all requests are subject to availability.
How many tickets can be requested for each reservation?
A maximum of nine people can be included in each reservation, and the person making the reservation must be one of the visitors. Reservations can be made as many times as desired throughout 2026. Groups of more than nine people are subject to the basilica's group reservation policies.
Can the 50% discount be added to the rate for those under 30, or to other discounts?
No. The website states that the resident discount cannot be combined with other discounts or benefits. It doesn't clarify which base price is used for residents under 30, so it's best to ask about this in an email.
Until when is it valid, and when will it be renewed in 2027?
The validity period is from January 1st to December 31st, 2026. As of November 4th, 2026, the official website does not mention 2027, and there is no announcement of an extension or an end date. Anyone wishing to visit the basilica in January or later should confirm the date with the basilica before assuming anything.
Can a discounted resident ticket be exchanged or returned?
Generally, no. Changes or refunds for unused tickets are accepted if requested at least 48 hours before the visit (official documentation is required within that timeframe), and the changes must be made within 15 days following the original date. All requests are handled via the same email address, subject to availability.
